JANE HIRSHFIELD is an award-winning poet, essayist, and translator who has written eight much-honored books of poetry, including Given Sugar, Given Salt (2001), Come, Thief (2013), and The Beauty (2015). She has received fellowships from the Guggenheim and Rockefeller foundations, the NEA, and the Academy of American Poets. Elected a chancellor of the Academy in 2012, her work appears in The New Yorker, The Atlantic, The New York Review of Books, The New Republic, The Washington Post, Poetry, and eight editions of The Best American Poems. Rosanna Warren writes that Hirshfield’s language “in its cleanliness and transparency, poses riddles of a quietly metaphysical nature,” while Judith Kitchen says that her work is “about how to negotiate the difficulties of living while, at the same time, paying homage to what life has to offer.” Hirshfield has taught widely, including at U.C. Berkeley and Stanford, and is a member of the advisory board of Sixteen Rivers Press.
